The magick of snow and how to work with it

Snow is a truly magickal resource and it can be put to great use within a wide variety of spell work. Snow brings light onto the darkness - when it’s snowing on a dark winters night, you can feel the magick prickle in the air.

Snow brings the element of water and connects it directly to our deep mind and intuition. It’s deeply cleansing and purifying and acts as a sort of cleansing reset.

Aside from its cleansing nature, its every unique crystal is like a tiny quartz, shimmering in the moonlight, and dancing on the breeze. This crystalline nature can be put to good use in a similar way as we would use quartz.

Snow also has the unique quality of having a silencing effect upon the world too, which again, we can use to help bring a sense of inner silence and peace to ourselves.

So here are 5 great uses for the wonderful white stuff...

1. Purifying ritual baths

Adding a large handful of snow to your ritual bath helps to wash away any lingering negative energy which may be clinging to you.

Not only does snow cleanse your body, but it also cleanses your energy field, leaving it sparkling and fresh.

2. Make a snowman poppet

Children and adults alike love building snowmen, so why not utilise this practice in your magick?

If you have someone in your life who is causing you problems - or if your head is filled with worries - build a snowman, attach your intentions or sink your worries into the snow used to build it, and then watch as your worries simply melt away. You can add in any symbols, herbs or anything else you wish to include to add a more powerful kick to your spell.

3. Snow healing

If you or someone you know is suffering from some illness - whether physical or mental - then gather some snow from a quiet, undisturbed natural place, and place it into a bowl.

Light a white candle next to it and allow it to melt under the glowing white light.

When it has turned to water, add in any relevant essential oils or herbs you wish, and decant it into a spray bottle and use as needed.

4. Melt away a bad habit

We can use snow to melt our bad habits away - if you have some negative habit or behaviour that’s impacting your life, use the snow to get rid of it.

Simply draw a pentacle into the snow, write out the habit you wish to melt away, then place the piece of paper deep into the snow in the centre of the pentacle. Sit and focus on your intention for a few moments, before piling on more snow onto the spot where you buried your habit.

As the snow melts, visualise your habit melting away with it, and being washed away by the water as it runs off.

5. Inner child work

Children love snow! It’s an old cliche, but we can use this connection to heal inner child wounds.

Use the silence and joy of snow to allow your inner child to play freely.

Talk to the little you inside and invite them to come outside to play. What would your younger you have felt like during snowy days? Would you have been excited, playful and happy?

Allow yourself to play in the snow. Put the adult you aside for a while and just play freely. Build a snowman, create snow angels, throw snowballs, try to catch snowflakes on your tongue. Allow the little you to play freely.

Now take up a handful of snow and make a snowball. Project any thoughts of shame, guilt, anger or hurt into this ball. Visualise it all going deep into the snowball and being locked away inside its shimmering magickal crystals.

Now find an open space, and throw all of that shame, guilt, anger, tension, hurt or frustration away as far and as hard as you can. If you feel like screaming as you do, then do so.

Launch it far away with all your strength and watch as it all flies away and smashes into nothingness.

Afterwards, go inside and dry off, and feel the warmth wash over you as you wrap the child you in warm towels, blankets and comfy clothes.

Make yourself a delicious hot chocolate, as extravagantly as you can, with marshmallows, cream, cinnamon, whatever your child you would love, and feel thankful for all that the little you has become. Give them thanks and tell them that you are happy and grateful for their help in you becoming who you are today.

Take the rest of the day off to do things which fill your soul with joy.
